Bank account opening support in Paraguay

A local account for rent, bills and transfers in guaraníes: we check your documents, book the appointment and go with you to the bank or cooperative, with a lawyer and an interpreter at your side.

Duration
Account usually active 1 to 3 business days after the appointment
For whom
Residents with a cédula

Once the cédula is in hand, a local account is the next practical step for most newcomers: rent and bills by direct debit (débito automático), transfers within Paraguay in seconds, and later a credit card. The account is opened in person at a branch, and the conversation there runs in Spanish. The institution checks your identity, your address and where your income comes from, and what goes into the KYC form is hard to correct afterwards.

That is where our support comes in. We check in advance that your documents are complete, book the appointment and walk into the branch with you, together with a lawyer and an interpreter. It works the same at a bank as at a cooperative, for example Cooperativa Universitaria. Up to two appointments are included.

To be clear about the scope: we owe you the accompaniment, not the account. Whether an institution accepts you as a customer or member, and on what terms, is its own decision.

What's included

  • A check of your documents before the appointment (cédula, passport, proof of address and income)
  • Booking the appointment at the bank or cooperative
  • Accompaniment to the branch by a lawyer and an interpreter
  • Interpreting during the meeting and while you complete the account application and the KYC questions
  • Up to two appointments

Process

  1. 1Agreeing which institution to approach and which account type (guaraní or US dollar)
  2. 2Document check; if anything is missing, you hear about it before the appointment
  3. 3Booking the appointment with the institution
  4. 4The branch appointment with lawyer and interpreter
  5. 5Account activation by the institution

With complete documents, the branch appointment usually takes one to three hours. At banks the account is then typically active within 1 to 3 business days, the debit card follows after 5 to 7 days, and a credit card usually comes only after 3 to 6 months of account history. These are figures from experience; the institution sets the pace.

Who is this for?

For residents with a cédula who need an everyday account in Paraguay and would rather not handle the branch conversation alone in Spanish. Couples and families should note that each person opens their own account, which is why the support is charged per person.

Pricing

  • Bank account opening supportPrice on request

Price per person. The institution's own charges are not included: at a cooperative the joining fee and share capital, and account maintenance wherever you bank. You pay those directly to the bank or cooperative.

Important note: Only the bank or cooperative decides whether to open the account; we owe you the accompaniment to the appointment, not an open account. We are not a bank, investment or legal adviser and coordinate the appointments with our partners on the ground. Cooperatives have no state deposit guarantee and are supervised by INCOOP rather than the banking superintendency; whether one suits your savings is your call. US citizens and green-card holders: the IRS taxes your worldwide income regardless of residency, and a Paraguayan account counts toward your FBAR and FATCA reporting.

FAQ

Do I need the cédula before opening a bank account in Paraguay?
For our support, yes, it is a prerequisite. A few banks open accounts on a passport and proof of address alone, but these tend to be restricted (often no credit card and no transfers abroad), more expensive and meant as a stopgap. With a cédula, opening is much simpler and the account is fully usable.
Can I open a Paraguayan bank account from abroad?
No. The account is opened in person in Paraguay with physical identification, and you sign the application and the signature card yourself. We prepare the appointment and go with you, but you have to attend it.
Which documents does a Paraguayan bank or cooperative ask for?
Usually your cédula and passport, originals with copies, proof of address (a rental contract or a utility bill for electricity, water or gas) and proof of income such as bank statements, an employment contract, a tax return or a sworn income declaration. Some institutions also want a reference letter from another bank, evidence of the source of funds for larger deposits, or a RUC if you are self-employed in Paraguay. We confirm what your institution needs before the appointment.
Bank or cooperative in Paraguay: what is the difference?
A cooperative is member-owned: you join, pay a joining fee and subscribe share capital. Cooperatives often pay higher interest on term deposits but carry no state deposit guarantee. Bank deposits are covered by the Fondo de Garantía de Depósitos up to 75 monthly minimum wages per depositor and bank. We accompany you to either; the choice is yours.
What happens when a Paraguayan bank refuses the account or asks for more documents?
The decision belongs to the institution, so we cannot promise an opening. The support covers up to two appointments, and if the bank or cooperative asks for something more, we tell you exactly what is missing.
Will my Paraguayan bank account be reported to my home country's tax authority?
Not automatically for now. Paraguay has committed to the OECD standard for automatic exchange (CRS) but has not implemented it: the OECD status list of 4 September 2026 shows its first exchanges due by 2028. Exchange on request by a foreign tax authority is already possible for tax periods from 1 January 2022. If your departure from your home country and your registration in Paraguay are both in order, that poses no problem. How your case is treated belongs with a tax adviser, and US persons report foreign accounts to the IRS themselves in any event.
