Paraguay for freelancers & digital nomads

If you earn online from clients anywhere in the world, Paraguay is one of the cleanest ways to keep what you earn: a territorial tax system that leaves foreign income untaxed, plus a real residency you actually control.

Freelancers and digital nomads are Paraguay's natural audience. Your income already comes from abroad, you are not tied to one office, and your main problem is that a high-tax home country still treats you as a full taxpayer. Paraguay's territorial system flips that: only income earned inside Paraguay is taxable, so your foreign client income is untaxed in principle, provided you become a genuine Paraguay tax resident and structure your invoicing correctly.

The usual setup pairs Paraguay residency with a US LLC as a clean, pass-through billing entity. Your clients pay the LLC, the LLC is a foreign company from Paraguay's perspective, and you draw the profit as a Paraguay resident. It is simple, well understood by international banks, and easy to run from a laptop.

One honest caveat before you plan around 0%: if you are a US citizen or green-card holder, the United States taxes your worldwide income regardless of where you live. Paraguay residency does not remove that. Read the US-citizens guide below and talk to a US-qualified advisor before assuming a 0% outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really pay 0% as a freelancer in Paraguay?
In principle, yes: foreign-source income is not taxed under Paraguay's territorial system. In practice that depends on genuine Paraguay tax residency (roughly 120 days a year) and correct structuring so your income clearly counts as foreign. We help you get the setup right.
Do I need a US LLC as a freelancer?
Not strictly, but it is the most common clean structure. A US LLC gives you a professional, bankable billing entity that is foreign from Paraguay's point of view. See the US LLC + Paraguay guide for the details.
I'm a US citizen. Does this still work for me?
Partly. Paraguay lowers your cost of living and gives you a strong second residency, but the US still taxes your worldwide income. The FEIE helps only partially. Read the US-citizens guide and take US-qualified advice.
How often do I have to be in Paraguay?
For residency, once a year during the temporary phase and once every three years once permanent. For tax residency, plan on roughly 120 days a year. These are separate tests, and we walk you through both.
