Extending temporary residency (ampliación)
When the switch to permanent residency does not fit yet, we handle the extension of your temporary residency for another two years, so the decision about the permanent stage can wait.
- Price
- from $2,100
- Duration
- Two more years
- For whom
- Temporary residents not ready to switch
Temporary residency ends after two years, and most residents then move on to permanent residency. The migration law Ley 6984/2022 also allows the temporary residency to be extended for a period of the same length, in other words two more years. In Paraguay this step is called the ampliación or prórroga.
An extension is not a lighter version of the change; it is the alternative to it, and you remain a temporary resident. Migraciones asks for essentially the same package as at the first application, apostilled at home and translated in Paraguay. The solvency evidence under Resolución DNM 407/2026 belongs to the permanent-residency application instead.
The extension earns its place when the evidence for the change does not hold up by the deadline, for example because the activity you want to rely on for permanent residency is still too new. We work out with you which route fits, then take the extension through Migraciones.
What's included
- An upfront assessment: extension or the change into permanent residency
- A document list, and a check of which papers from your first application need replacing
- Deadline control, so the application is in before your temporary residency expires
- The extension application at Migraciones
- Follow-up until the decision
- The Migraciones government fee and the sworn translations of your documents
Process
- 1A first call about three months before your temporary residency expires
- 2The decision between extension and the change into permanent residency
- 3You obtain the home-country documents with their apostilles (or consular legalization); the translation happens in Paraguay
- 4Filing at Migraciones while the temporary residency is still valid
- 5After approval: planning the later change into permanent residency
What decides everything is filing while the temporary residency is still valid. Let the deadline pass and the residency lapses, and you begin again with fresh apostilles and new local documents. We therefore start about three months ahead.
Who is this for?
For temporary residents whose two years are ending and who cannot or do not yet want to apply for permanent residency, for instance because the evidence for their solvency category is still missing or because they have not decided to stay for good.
Pricing
- Temporary residency extension (ampliación)$2,100
The price includes the Migraciones fee for the extension, 11 jornales mínimos since 1 July 2026 (1,287,847 PYG in cash), and the sworn translations of your documents. Not included: the apostilles or consular legalizations of your home-country documents, which you arrange where they were issued.
Important note: Migraciones decides whether the extension is granted. We are not a law firm: we prepare the application and coordinate it with our partner on the ground, and bring in a partner lawyer for individual legal questions. As a temporary resident you remain bound, after the extension too, by the limit of one year of continuous absence; since Resolución DNM 376/2026 Migraciones reconciles entry and exit records twice a year.
